Crosslinkable polymers for efficient and stable AEM electrolysis in low-concentration KOH solution (AEMlinked)
As part of the BMBF project AEMlinked, Hahn-Schickard is developing special AEM ionomers to create stable, high-performance membranes for use in AEM water electrolysis.
Alkaline membrane-based AEM electrolysis has the potential to drastically reduce hydrogen production costs by combining the advantages of classic alkaline and acidic PEM electrolysis: low-cost materials of alkaline electrolysis and high gas quality, compactness and the advantageous load behavior of PEM electrolysis.
As part of the BMBF-funded AEMlinked project, Hahn-Schickard is synthesizing promising AEM ionomers and processing them into flexible membranes. The central aim of AEMlinked is to bring stable and highly efficient AEM electrolysis, preferably in pure water, closer to application. Tailor-made polymers with a high molecular weight and good film-forming properties for the ionomer membrane and the binder polymers are to be developed for this purpose. Excessive swelling in electrolytes with a very low salt content can be counteracted by cross-linking. The in-situ characterization of the performance and durability of the new membrane under industrial operating conditions (pressure > 10 bar) is being investigated by Leibniz University Hannover.
