Development of rapid detection systems for bacteria in ballast water (Clean Ballast Water [CleBaWa])

Goal of CleBaWa is the development of a rapid detection system that targets bacteria in ballast water samples of ships. Two approaches are developed in parallel: an electrochemical biosensor and a lateral-flow test-strip. Both approaches rely on the specific detection of the bacteria’s DNA. The results will be transmitted via smartphone app to the appropriate authorities

Goal of CleBaWa is the development of a rapid detection system that targets bacteria in ballast water samples of ships. Two approaches are developed in parallel: an electrochemical biosensor and a lateral-flow test-strip. Both approaches rely on the specific detection of the bacteria’s DNA. The results will be transmitted via smartphone app to the appropriate authorities.

In a first step, bacteria are enriched from ballast water samples and subsequently lysed. The released the is then amplified via PCR before it is detected by either a NALFIA test-strips or an electrochemical sensor.
Focus of Hahn-Schickard is on the development of the electrochemical sensor. This includes the layout, production and assembly of the chip, the integration of electrodes, the immobilization of specific DNA probes, and the analysis of the sample. The interdisciplinary task is developed in close cooperation of Hahn-Schickard Freiburg (surface-chemistry, electronics, chip production) and Stuttgart (integration of electrode, e.g. by inkjet printing).
