Professors Manoli and Zengerle, Hahn-Schickard Institute Directors at the Villingen-Schwenningen and Freiburg locations, jointly direct faculties at the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK) of the University of Freiburg. IMTEK is one of the world's largest and leading academic research centers in the field of microsystem technology. IMTEK's research is focused on energy-autonomous microsystems, smart systems integration, lab-on-a-chip and medical microsystems, smart materials, surfaces and processes, as well as optical systems. Prof. Dr.-Eng. Yiannos Manoli directs IMTEK's Fritz Hüttinger Chair of Microelectronics, while Prof. Dr.-Eng. Roland Zengerle directs the Laboratory for MEMS Applications, an industry endowed chair.
Prof. Dr.-Eng. André Zimmermann, Hahn-Schickard's Head of Institute in Stuttgart, also jointly directs the Institute for Microintegration (IFM) at the University of Stuttgart and conducts fundamental research in the field of reliability of microtechnical components there. In particular, this includes the investigation of damage mechanisms, as well as holistic model-based design for construction, housing, and connection technology for microsystems.
