Will you join the MicroTAS conference 2015 in Korea? If yes, feel free join our course "Assay automation by centrifugal microfluidic platforms: simulation based design, scalable production, and applications". The course addresses R&D scientists and engineers, medical doctors, decision makers, assay providers and product developers at universities and companies with interest in microfluidic assay automation.

Learning Objectives:
Microfluidics enables miniaturization, integration, automation and massive parallelization of biochemical and/or biomolecular assays. However, the implementation of integrated tests can be an expensive, long-term, and high-risk project. We propose the use of microfluidic platforms in combination with simulation based design and scalable production to establish an efficient and low risk development process.
In this course we present centrifugal microfluidic implementations of important unit operations such as reagent storage & release, sample & liquid transport, metering, mixing, extraction, amplification, detection etc. We use the term “process chain” to show how these unit operations can be combined for the automation of laboratory work flows. Such aggregation of basic functionalities enables efficient fluidic design at a higher level of integration. The design process is supported by network simulations to significantly reduce the number of costly iterations in microfluidic assay integration.
Furthermore we introduce our concept for the seamless scale-up of chip fabrication from prototyping to production, in which the replication of microfluidic cartridges is based on microthermoforming of thermoplastic polymer foils.
The course ends with an up to date overview of various centrifugal microfluidic assay implementations ranging from clinical chemistry over nucleic acid testing, and cell based assays.
